Phonemic awareness is a part of phonological awareness in which listeners can hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes, the smallest units of sound that helps to differentiate units of meaning.  For example: separating the spoken word, “mat” into three distinct phonemes requires phonemic awareness.  A child that is phonemically aware is able to manipulate and isolate sounds, blend and segment sounds into spoken and written words.
